Courses taught in English. Designed for full credit in North America
Canadian Students have the opportunity to live and study in Israel at Tel Aviv University. A wide range of excellent courses in major disciplines taught in English by members of TAU's superb faculty. Through the Overseas Program, the university offers a unique academic and personal experience shared with students from all over the world.
Students in the one-year and one-semester programs are required to attend the Intensive Hebrew Language Program (Ulpan) prior to the start of their semester studies. Only students who demonstrate proficiency in Hebrew by passing a written exam are exempt. In addition to the Overseas Student Program courses, students may attend some regular departmental courses at TAU.
Tel Aviv University is located in the heart of Israel's coastal region, on a spacious 170-acre campus comprising nine faculties, 20 schools, 106 departments, 83 research institutes and the Museum of the Diaspora (Beit Hatefusoth, with its resources for genealogy research). The University is situated only a short distance from the beaches and the promenade that stretches from Ramat Aviv to Jaffa, the Land of Israel Museum, as well as cafes, restaurants, and shops.
One-Year Program
Undergraduate students who meet admissions standards and wish to study in Israel for one year may spend two consecutive semesters at Tel Aviv University in a rigorous program of study. Students entering first year university are eligible for this program. In order to gain the maximum benefit of the program and the experience of living in Israel, we recommend that students enroll for a full year.
One-Semester Program
The Overseas Student Program provides students who cannot leave their home universities for the full year with the option of spending a single semester at Tel Aviv University. One-semester students may choose to enroll in either the fall or spring semester.
Summer Programs
Tel Aviv University's exciting summer programs offer both undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to learn Hebrew and enroll in exciting courses that deal with contemporary issues shaping the Middle East and the world. Students are given the option of: studying Hebrew, participating in challenging and contemporary courses, or both!
Intensive Hebrew Language Program (Ulpan)
Participation in a pre-semester Intensive Hebrew Language Program (Ulpan) is mandatory for all students in the one-year or one-semester program. Students who demonstrate proficiency in the Hebrew language, based upon the results of an exam administered by the Office of Academic Affairs in Canada, may be exempt from participation. The Ulpan offers transfer credit and is conducted prior to the beginning of each semester.
Summer Program in Yiddish language
A vibrant new summer program in Yiddish language and culture is now available at Tel Aviv University. This four-week program, scheduled during the month of July, offers intensive Yiddish instruction on campus at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. This morning program is run in conjunction with a rich afternoon program of lectures, tours, theatre, concerts, museums, films, and cultural events.
The M.A. Program in Middle Eastern History
The M.A. Program in Middle Eastern History, taught in English, is conducted under the auspices of the Department of Middle Eastern and African History in cooperation with the Overseas Student Program. The program is designed for English-speaking students who have completed an undergraduate degree in Middle Eastern History or a related field. Nine seminars, Hebrew and Arabic language studies and a thesis are required for the M.A.
Medical Programs and Electives
The American Program of the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, chartered by the State of New York and accredited by the State of Israel, offers an opportunity for qualified North Americans to pursue a four-year medical education program with a course of studies patterned after North American medical schools. For residency assignments in Canadian hospitals, an examination is required in addition to the submission of grade transcripts and the medical school diploma.
TASP — Teach and Study Program
There is an escalating demand for trained teachers of English both in international settings where English is not the national language and here in Canada where the multicultural student population is increasing. The MA Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) program at Tel-Aviv University was established to respond to this growing need worldwide. Graduates find employment as teachers, curriculum writers, and language testers TAU is shaping young minds to take their place among the world's best.
