Tel Aviv University Research awarded $100K grant
The Kenneth Rainin Foundation, which began giving out grants for innovative research on Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) this year, awarded the funds to Dr. Dan Peer of TAU’s Department of Cell Research & Immunology and Dr. Eran Elinav,of Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center for their research project on harnessing Immuno-nanotechnology for the treatment of IBD. The other team to win was from Atlanta, Georgia and the winners were chosen from amongst 100 applications.
"The Foundation received a tremendous response to its inaugural Innovator Awards Program during its February-March 2010 application timeframe," said Jen Rainin, president of the Kenneth Rainin Foundation. "Our Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) carefully reviewed each application and based on their input, the Foundation's Board of Directors approved the funding of these two outstanding and innovative projects.”
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract. The main forms of IBD are Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis. About five million people worldwide suffer from some form of IBD. Dr. Dan Peer returned to Israel and TAU in 2008 after being recruited from Harvard Medical School. His research is focused on Crohn’s disease as well as multiple myeloma – an as yet incurable form of cancer of bone marrow cells.
